Leg tattoos

Lower leg tattoo

The lower leg runs from the knee to the ankle, and a tattoo can be placed on the front, side or back. The elongated shape is ideal for vertical designs: portraits, characters from films and games, animals and realistic scenes.

The lower leg is chosen both for a first tattoo and to grow a collection: in summer the piece shows in shorts and skirts, and the rest of the time it is easy to hide under trousers.

About this placement

What sets a lower leg tattoo apart

At the front the lower leg is narrow and almost flat, while at the back the skin lies over muscle and curves gently. That is why the artist builds the composition along the axis of the leg: crisp outlines and graphic shapes work well on the front, dense fill and soft colour transitions on the calf.

The edges of the piece flow smoothly from one side to the other so the tattoo looks cohesive from the front, side and back. Black and grey and colour work equally well here.

Work on this placement

Popular designs

  • Characters from films, games and anime — a full-length hero.
  • Portraits — people and animals in a vertical format.
  • Realistic scenes — nature, cities, space.
  • Lettering — short words and phrases in a vertical line.
  • Flowers and botanicals — roses, irises and branches on long stems.
  • Wings and feathers — elongated shapes that follow the line of the leg.

Why choose the lower leg

The lower leg strikes a good balance of size, comfort and visibility. There is room for a full scene, and you decide whether to show the tattoo. It is also a convenient place to start a larger project: later the piece can continue onto the knee, thigh or foot.

How the design is created

  1. Consultation — we discuss the subject, the style and where on the lower leg the piece will look best: front, side or back.
  2. Design — the artist adjusts the proportions to the length and shape of your leg and plans the transitions from the front onto the calf.
  3. Transfer to the skin — on the day of the session the stencil is placed and moved until it sits straight, then checked from the front, side and back.

How many sessions it takes

A small lower leg piece is done in one short session, and a medium-sized one usually in one session. A design that wraps the whole lower leg, front and back, is done over several sessions with breaks so the skin has time to recover.
