Hyperrealism

When realism isn't enough: every pore, highlight and reflection, just like a photo.

Hyperrealism is the highest level of detail in tattooing. The artist captures what you'd normally only see in a close-up photo: skin texture, reflections in the eyes, moisture, the gleam of metal and glass.

How it differs from realism

Realism makes a subject look real. Hyperrealism goes further: it heightens contrast, depth and fine textures so the piece looks even more three-dimensional than the photo itself. This effect takes a great deal of experience — it's where an artist's skill shows most.

Subjects for hyperrealism

It comes into its own where texture and light matter: close-up portraits, eyes, animals, water droplets, fabric, metal, gemstones, film and game characters. The piece can be in colour or in grey tones.

Placement and sessions

Fine textures need space, so hyperrealism is usually done large — on the upper arm, thigh, back or as part of a sleeve. This kind of work is done over several sessions with breaks for healing, and your artist plans in advance what will be done in each one.

Frequently asked questions

01Can hyperrealism be done small?

A small piece can be very detailed, but the hyperrealistic effect really shows where there's room for texture. If you want a small tattoo, your artist will suggest microrealism.

02How long is a session?

A session for a large piece is a full working day with breaks. Your artist will tell you how many such sessions you'll need once they've seen the design and placement.

03What kind of photo do you need?

Sharp, in good light, without filters and in high resolution. The more detail you can see in the photo, the more of it will end up in the tattoo.

04Will the detail last over time?

Fine textures soften over the years, but the depth rests on light and contrast, which your artist builds in with a margin. Following the aftercare instructions and protecting the healed tattoo from the sun help it last.

05How much does a hyperrealism tattoo cost?

It's one of the most labour-intensive styles, so we price it individually: by size, level of detail and number of sessions. Describe your idea and send references, and we'll give you a quote.

Not sure which service is yours? That's normal: an idea usually lives in words, not in the name of a style. Tell us what you'd like and where — we'll suggest how it sits best and show you similar work. Come in for a free consultation: we'll look at the placement, try the design on and tell you honestly if it won't work that way.
