Watercolour

For a light touch: colour that flows across the skin like paint on paper.

Watercolour in tattooing is colour without hard edges: soft patches, smooth blends, splashes and drips. The piece looks light and free, and the style suits flowers, birds, animals and abstract designs well.

Watercolour and realism

Watercolour can take the lead, or it can surround a realistic image — a portrait, an animal or a flower. The centre of the piece stays sharp and recognisable, while the colour around it adds movement and mood. Our artists are strong in realism, so combinations like this come naturally to them.

How the colour stays light

Watercolour relies on contrast: the lightest areas are left to the skin, and the colour is packed in densely enough that the healed piece doesn't turn out paler than the design. Fine lines or dark accents help the tattoo keep its shape over the years.

A palette for your subject

Bring references or simply tell us which colours you like. Your artist will choose a palette for the subject and suggest where the colour should be stronger and where softer.

Frequently asked questions

01Does a watercolour tattoo need an outline?

Not necessarily. Watercolour can be done with no outline at all, or with fine lines added — your artist will suggest what suits your subject best.

02Will the colour last?

Like any colour tattoo, watercolour softens over time. Saturated colour, well-planned contrast and sun protection once healed help it stay bright.

03Can a watercolour tattoo be small?

Yes, but the patches of colour need space for the blends to stay soft. Your artist will suggest a size for your subject and placement.

04How long does a watercolour tattoo take?

A small piece is usually done in one short visit, a medium-sized one in one or two sessions.

Not sure which service is yours? That's normal: an idea usually lives in words, not in the name of a style. Tell us what you'd like and where — we'll suggest how it sits best and show you similar work. Come in for a free consultation: we'll look at the placement, try the design on and tell you honestly if it won't work that way.
