How to choose a tattoo placement

Placement matters as much as the design itself. It decides how large the piece can be, how often other people will see it and how it will look years from now. Here is what to think about in advance — especially if this is your first tattoo.

On show or just for you

First, decide whether you want to see your tattoo every day or keep it just for yourself. The forearm, hand and neck are almost always on show, while the upper arm, back, thigh and ribs are easy to cover with clothing — worth knowing if your workplace has a strict dress code. Think ahead, too: a small piece on the upper arm can later become the start of a sleeve, so leave yourself room when choosing a spot for your first tattoo.

Size and fit

The more detail a piece has, the more space it needs. A portrait or a scene with several figures suits the back, thigh, upper arm or the whole forearm, while a small piece works on the wrist, collarbone or behind the ear. Your artist will choose the scale so every detail stays crisp. You can check the size in advance with our online try-on, and at the consultation your artist will place the stencil on your body and see how the tattoo looks as you move.

How the work goes

The first step is a free consultation: your artist looks at the placement in person, talks through the subject and size with you, and tells you how many sessions it will take. The design is created specifically for your idea and the chosen spot. A medium-sized piece usually takes one or two sessions; a large one — a sleeve or a back piece, for example — takes several, with breaks for healing. After your session we stay in touch: we’ll explain how to look after your tattoo and check in ourselves to see how it’s healing.

Still not sure about placement? Write to us — your artist will look at your idea and suggest where the tattoo will look its best.
